We often think of yoga as something we do with the body, but our eyes and where we place our gaze can have a powerful effect on the mind.
Drishti, the yogic practice of maintaining a steady gaze, is a simple way to bring the attention inward and cultivate a sense of calm. By gently focusing the eyes on one point rather than constantly allowing them to wander, we also encourage the mind to become more focused and less distracted, and at the same time we can relieve tension from the eyes and strengthen the muscles.
Over time, this practice can improve eye sight, reduce tension we can feel in the head, and create a feeling of stillness and peace. This is a small reminder that where we place our gaze can influence where we place our attention.
